Kleur wit tot vuilwit. Brosse maar zeer harde schelpen, langwerpig met aan de voorzijde gekruiste, scherpe ribben. Intacte exemplaren bezitten vier losse schelpdelen. Leeft vaak groepsgewijs in vrij ondiep water (tot 8 m diepte) in zelfgeboorde gangen in zachte rots, stenen, veen en hout. De boorgangen zijn tot 8-10 cm diep. Uniek aangepast aan een borende levenswijze. De lange sipho\u2019s scheiden een lichtgevend groenachtig slijm uit.
