Kleur wit. Brosse, scheef-ovale licht gebolde schelp met de top ver voor het midden. De schelp bestaat uit drie delen (dit is vrijwel alleen aan het levende dier te zien): twee gelijke kleppen en een derde \u2018hulpstuk\u2019, dat aan de rugzijde ligt. De schelp heef concentrische, scherpe gestekelde ribbels die zich in de schelprand als stekels voortzetten. Ook fijnere radiale ribbels. Dun periostracum. Leeft meestal in de getijdenzone en boort in een veelheid van materialen, zoals hout, veen zachte steensoorten. Voorkomen\/vangst: Atlantische Oceaan, van Noorwegen tot Senegal: Noordzee; Middellandse Zee.
